2020 Desk Setup

I’m moving to a new place in a few days, so it was the perfect time for me to work on a new desk setup. I’ve been using the desk I had got made about 7 years ago, and it was beginning to feel a little crammed. I wanted a a slightly bigger, L-shaped table to put everything I had acquired over the years.

So I got one made. And yesterday, I spent all afternoon setting things up on it.

This is what the end result looks like.

I think I did a decent job with the cable management as well. For this I bought a few cable trays and attached them under the desk with screws.

I’m quite happy with how things turned out.

6XX

I’ve put about 100 hours of listening time into them and I can say that most mixes on iTunes sound pretty warm, louder even, while on Tidal they’re very neutral yet somehow more… intimate. May not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’ve grown to like it.

I’m not “adventurous” when it comes to music, I only listen to a very limited number of genres, so I’m not sure how they fare across a wider variety of music. But if you generally enjoy songs with a wide soundstage, you can’t go wrong with these.

I’m also yet to experiment with different DACs and amps. (Not quite ready to spend a lot of money on this yet.) That should be interesting to see. Right now I’m using a Creative Soundblaster G6, and it drives the headphones quite well.

Upgraded

I thought I’d be upgrading to a new 13 inch MacBook Pro, but I changed my mind and got the new 16 inch instead.

I got the base model, but this is still a capable machine. It packs:

  • a 2.6GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i7 processor
  • an AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory
  • a 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
  • 512GB SSD storage

I’ve set up all my accounts and apps on the new machine now. iCloud and 1Password made it incredibly easy.

I also thought of installing Windows through bootcamp, so that I can finally play the first two Witcher games.
